First up is Benjamin, by far the biggest and most laid back of the group. He showed up sleeping and never stopped.
Second to come home was Ellie. She seemed to know she was modeling for the camera and enjoyed every minute of it.
Cannot fail to mention big brother Alex! Adding a toddler onto any session is almost always a struggle but this guy was just perfect. Not many 3 year olds can sit perfectly still while 4 babies are placde on their lap but he didn't make a peep. The quadruplets are pretty lucky to have this guy looking out for them!
Next was Michael. While he is the most boisterous of the bunch he is always sure to give you that little smile that guarantees it is all worth it.
Lastly was little Hailey and she was totally worth the wait and wait and wait...even if she reserved all her smiles for the moments in between her pictures.

Choosing outfits for 6 people that co-ordinate but do not match (which is my goal) is no easy task. It is not uncommon for me to have 2 or more different outfit options for any one person and decide once I see everything all laid out together (this is my favorite part by the way...if you know my nerdy backstory I majored in math in college and love a good puzzle). My first step is to do one of two things: Choose a color palette, or Choose an outfit that I want to be the focus. In this case I chose a color palette. We were going in for a summer session so I decided I wanted classic and clean. I went with light shades of blue, white and gray.
TIP: If I know I want a particular color I will sometimes look to coordinating paint swatches to visualize what other colors I want to incorporate and how they will all look together
As a mom of 4 small kids I do most of my shopping online (amazon prime is my life!). I always start with the girls because there are so many more options. We were having these photos done in celebration of my twins' first birthday so I knew I wanted to start there. Before I purchase anything I like to get an idea of how those things would come together. I use all of the very sophisticated technology I have at my disposal to do this...no, just kidding, I use paint.
TIP: I use a paint document to copy and paste outfits I am considering into one place so that I can see what they look like together.
When I am satisfied with the girls I move on to the fellas. I like to leave the boys to the end because a plain colored button down in a color that is needed to create balance is an easy way to tie things together (and let's face it guys look good in just about anything). I then go to the accessories. I use belts, headbands, jewelry, bow ties and even nail polish to try to make sure that each person has a good representation of the colors I have chosen. That's it, easy right?!
One last thing I want to note is that had I decided to to base everything on one outfit instead of a set of colors, I would follow the same process. The only difference is that I would get my color palette using the colors in the outfit I had chosen to be the focus. And don't be afraid to ask you photographer for their opinion. They want you to look great as much as you do.
Thank you to the lovely and talented Heidi Hope Photography in Rhode Island for capturing my family last summer. And yes I absolutely outsource my family photos to a professional because I value my community and feel it is worth every penny!
